Ensuring Safety First: Tiong Se Academy’s Earthquake Preparedness Efforts

In response to the recent series of earthquakes and aftershocks that struck Mindanao in October 2025, Tiong Se Academy, Inc. reinforces its commitment to ensuring the safety and preparedness of all students and staff. The school actively carries out various earthquake preparedness initiatives to keep everyone informed and ready in case of emergencies.

Teachers from the Science Department led discussions on earthquake concepts and essential safety measures on what to do before, during, and after an earthquake. They also emphasized the key phases of the earthquake drill, particularly the “Drop, Cover, and Hold” technique, to promote proper response and safety awareness among students.

Through the efforts of the School Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Committee, the school conducted an inventory of hard hats in classrooms and addressed any shortages to ensure that each room is properly equipped. In addition, Go Bags were prepared for administrators, faculty, staff, and students, containing essential items such as flashlights, extra batteries, whistles, and face masks. A checklist of additional recommended items was also distributed to parents so they could prepare personalized Go Bags for their children, ensuring that food and medicines are safe and appropriate for each student’s needs.

On October 20, 2025, the school conducted an unannounced earthquake drill in partnership with Barangay 293 officials led by Brgy. Chairwoman Marissa M. Alejandro, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) San Nicolas represented by FO1 Ralph Albert M. Cabuag, and the Meisic Police Station represented by PSMS Rharl Nicdao and Pat Nelia Tereng. The activity aimed to assess the school’s readiness and response in the event of an actual earthquake. After the drill, an assessment and discussion were held in the Principal’s Office to evaluate the school’s performance, identify areas for improvement, and commend the cooperation of all participants.

The successful conduct of the drill highlighted the cooperation, discipline, and presence of mind of the Tiong Se Academy community. With continuous efforts and collaboration, the school remains steadfast in its goal of fostering a culture of safety, awareness, and preparedness, ensuring that every learner is not only educated but also ready to respond effectively in times of emergency.
